Japan's Cyber Homeless

By 5:23 AM , , ,

Not everyone can afford to pay rent in Tokyo specially if you're drifting between odd jobs. Being one of the most expensive cities in the world, a 30-square meter apartment can cost you 150,000 yen or around $1,250 per month. The solution? Live in a cyber cafe.
Home sweet home
They are called "net cafe refugees" (ネットカフェ難民 netto kafe nanmin) a.k.a the "cyber homeless" (サイバーホームレス saibā hōmuresu). They don't own a permanent address and sleep in a 24-hour cyber cafe. These cyber cafes usually have divisions if you're concerned about privacy, and they include food, drink and shower to their basic internet service alongside access to a DVD player, television and comics.

As you can see, the cubicle is cramped and there's just enough space to curl up to sleep but this is definitely more affordable than staying in a capsule hotel since the rate is just somewhere around 2,000 yen or $17 vs. capsule's hotel of around 3,000 or $25.

Welcome to my crib!
These cyber cafes are also the best hotel alternative for the men who are too drunk to go home and the women who failed to catch the last train.
